Becoming a Retriever is about starting your academic journey, building community, and getting introduced to UMBC values.

As a part of the Retriever community, we value inclusive excellence, storytelling, and building authentic connections. Prioritizing these values requires us to know how to connect across differences, listen deeply, and treat one another with respect – we ALL have a part to play. As a part of Welcome, Retrievers!, this in-person session will help you explore how you put the "I" in inclusion.

Through storytelling, audience engagement, and reflection opportunities you will reflect on your role in ensuring that everyone knows that their story belongs at UMBC, including yours!

This year we will be hosting a "Welcome To UMBC Dinner" along with Your Story Belongs Here for New Students enrolling for Spring 2026.

New students will need to RSVP by January 20, 2026 to reserve their seat. Space is limited and we anticipate reaching capacity quickly. If we do reach capacity, we will institute a waitlist.

This event is limited to new students only. For the purposes of this event, "new student" means students that have been admitted for the Spring 2026 semester.

This event is sponsored by The Center for Social Justice Dialogue, the Division of Institutional Equity, the UMBC Theatre Department, Campus Life Student Engagement, and the Division of Student Affairs.
