Are you a woman in the STEM field? Apply to be a mentor!
Location

Date
May 7, 2015 – May 14, 2015 (All Day Event)
Description
Reach is a mentorship program that encourages and empowers young women from Baltimore to become more involved in the STEM fields. Our program is built on the mentorship component, aiming to foster close relations between the young women with whom we will be working and their mentors; we will also design and offer workshops intended to combat sexism and discrimination and to provide participants with basic introductions to a variety of STEM fields. Our research component takes place during the second semester, in which the mentor (you!) guides her mentee in designing, implementing, and presenting her own research project.
The Structure of the Reach Project: Our first semester focuses on three main goals: deepening the relationship between students and their mentors, exploring topics such as sexual discrimination and female empowerment, and introducing girls to different applications of science, math, and engineering. We will host both social and educational meetings between the mentors and students.
Our second semester revolves around the design, implementation, and presentation of a research project that the mentor and student will collaborate on. Upon the project’s conclusion, students will have the chance to enter their research projects in science fairs and present them to the UMBC community (students, parents, and staff members).
What we are looking for in a mentor:
Undergraduates pursing a degree in the STEM fields
Flexibility
Willingness to build a relationship
Commitment
Accountability
We want the Reach Project to benefit everyone. As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge, perspective, and advice with a young woman looking to navigate a professional path similar to the one you took when she graduates high school. The Reach Project not only allows women to develop their skills in math and the sciences, but first and foremost, it seeks to create lasting relationships between like minds.
Qualifications:
Must be majoring in a STEM or STEM-Related Field
Must have at least a 3.0 GPA
Must be able to commit at least 3 hours a week (class credit can be offered)
Must be willing to commit to two semesters of service
Must be willing to remain in contact with mentee throughout week and after program ends
