Description

Our i3b team is currently in the process of developing a new workshop, named “DreamZone” which centers the UMBC immigrant population and their experiences, namely DACA recipients, TPS and F-1 Visa Holders, undocumented immigrants, as well as the children of the named populations. After the initial steps of hosting focus groups and meetings with UMBC immigrant students, we are asking those in allyship with the immigrant to join us to let us know how we can support our immigrant community as a campus!

Time will be allotted for our i3b staff, as well as our partners from the Center of Global Engagement to answer any questions or provide feedback on areas where you would like to grow your learning to be included in the training, as it relates to you may have in relation to the immigrant community. If you would like to submit your questions in advance, please fill out the DreamZone questionnaire here

What we envision so far:

This program will function similarly to "UndocuAlly" trainings on other campuses but a little more expansive to include those who may be U.S. Citizens but live in mixed-status households. We envision the design of this workshop to help students, alumni, staff, and faculty to create a more welcoming, affirmative atmosphere for ALL immigrant members of the UMBC community. The program will include a variety of activities for community members of all experience levels in respect to immigrant based-issues. This workshop includes basic terminology, core concepts, identity intersections, to skills-based sessions and allyship development. Participants will explore the nuances between different immigrant populations (i.e. DACA recipients, TPS Holders, Undocumented, F-1 Visa Holders) and generations (i.e. 1st, 2nd, and 1.5).

Similarly to our SafeZone LGBTQ+ Allyship Development Program, participants who complete the workshop have the opportunity to join UMBC’s formal network of DreamZone Ally List. This workshop would be geared to those who identify within the immigrant community to get connected to resources and also those who would like to know more how they can support our immigrant Retrievers.

Our i3b staff strives to create the most inclusive environment possible. If you need to request a disability-based accommodation or have any questions? Contact us at i3b@umbc.edu.
